Lenka Varekova is a nurse and a writer. She is originally from Czechoslovakia but after living and working in her favorite city for the last 20 years, she considers herself a New Yorker. She has always written stories in Czech, her native language, but now, after participating in the Writer’s Guild Initiative workshop, she has started to write in English. Her piece was chosen and read by Meryl Streep at the Writer’s Guild Initiative Benefit Gala and by Alfre Woodard at the Workers Circle Benefit. She is currently working on a story based on her life under communism.
